Fungi Futures: Micro-commission (Paid Opportunity)

 Application deadline: Sept 22nd

We’re looking for scientific support on our project ‘Fungi Futures: cultivating community, connection & creative expression’. Please forwards to anyone you think may be interested!

OVERVIEW
The ‘Fungi Futures’ project is a celebration of fungi’s potential to nourish our bodies, minds, and wider communities. Our artful activities promote the transformative power of mushrooms through a “grow your own” ethos, cultivating community, sustainable food, & creative connection.

Nutritious edible mushrooms have much potential in repurposing local surplus. Our micro-commission will help quantify the impact / potentials of fungi cultivation. This info will support our final public creative webinar (Tues Nov 4th 6-8.30pm) sharing our journey with the aim to inspire a wider adoption of our mycelial ethos and practices.

TASKS

We’ve been focusing on two species: Wine Cap and Oyster fungi. We need support in turning our collected DIY mushroom growing data into estimated emissions info. We give you the weight and type of surplus / low impact materials used (and any other info you may request).

  • You use carbon calculators to quantify the estimated emissions of our DIY organic mushroom growing (ideally showing comparison to commercial mushroom farming if this info is available).
  • You turn this into an accessible graphic/table for non-scientific audiences. We’ll present this as part of our final project event Nov 4th.

Thanks to Zero Carbon Cumbria funding pay is £15 per hour covering up to 50 hours across Oct (£750).

SKILLS

For this micro-commission we’re open to all levels of experience, including early career and student researchers. You don’t have to know anything about fungi. But, as we’re artist-led, we’re looking for someone who has the confidence and scientific abilities to take own initiative.

Essential:

  • Must have experience with emissions calculators.
  • Evidence of relevant scientific skills (could send a traditional CV, but other evidence welcome): Professional references, certificates, portfolio website, customer reviews.

Desirable:

  • In alignment with our CIC ethos : https://myceliumthinking.co.uk
  • Completed a relevant Undergraduate degree / equivalent professional experience.

    WHO CAN APPLY

Open to all companies & self-employed freelancers. Flexible online/hybrid job depending on location, communication preferences, and access needs.

We’re always keen to hear from people underrepresented in mainstream environmental sector / who face barriers to opportunities:  people from working class backgrounds, people with mental health issues, physical health/disability, sensory impairment, neurodivergence, people from the LGBTQIA+ community, carers, and people from Black, Asian, traveller, mixed heritage or other global majority backgrounds.

We’ll prioritise the applicant who fits the micro-commission best, but where there is a tie-breaker we’ll consider below:
    1. We support direct ‘positive action’ to address inequality and the higher barriers to opportunities some individuals face: where all final candidates have equal merit we’ll take into consideration if someone is underrepresented in the sector / our network.
    2. If applicant is based in Cumbria.

Sorry we may not have capacity to respond to everyone. Expect response by Mond 29th Sept.

    HOW TO APPLY
  • We want this to be super easy and low stress for all involved! Just send a friendly email to hello@myceliumthinking.co.uk (of no more than 500 words), with your bio, links, access doc, and any relevant attachments. We’ll respond if we need any further details.
  • If not already a member, we invite you to read our ‘join our network’ form (https://myceliumthinking.co.uk/join-us/), and consider joining if you like what we do. Being a member (or not) won’t have any impact on selection for open call roles and small contracts.  But where funds are available, we regularly turn to members for some temp work and consultancy.
  • Subscribe to our ‘Voluntary and Paid Opportunities’ updates mailing list.

All the best & Mush Love
